Military service is a sacrifice that many individuals and families choose to make to help ensure the safety and freedom of our nation. Although serving is a rewarding and meaningful experience, it also comes with challenges that extend beyond active duty.
Enduring Relationship
Justin and Kristie Ziegler, childhood sweethearts from South Florida who met in 8th grade, have supported each other through many hardships. They joined the Air Force together and were married just before Kristie left for basic training in 2003.
They were stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. Staff Sergeant Justin Ziegler served as a Fire Protection Technician with the 60th CES Wing and was deployed to Afghanistan to support “Operation Enduring Freedom.” In his role as a first responder, he witnessed firsthand the profound effects of stress, trauma, and PTSD on military personnel.
Senior Airman Kristie Ziegler quickly became a natural leader after completing her training as a Dietary Technician and was named “Airman of the Year” in 2006. During her deployment to Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, her duties shifted dramatically as she provided care to soldiers and civilians wounded in battle. One of her toughest challenges was treating young children affected by the conflict.
Transitioning Home
Long deployments and exposure to traumatic events made military life difficult for Justin and Kristie. Though both continue to cope with PTSD, the support and love they share form the foundation of a warm home for their two children and pets.
Recently, Justin and Kristie were honored through Military Makeover with Montel, a home improvement series dedicated to helping veterans transition to civilian life. This show, hosted by Navy veteran Montel Williams, highlights the challenges many veterans face upon returning home and brings together a team of decorators, designers, landscapers, and home renovation experts to transform the homes and lives of military families.
The makeover included a deep cleaning and home refresh, supported by local community volunteers and veterans’ advocates. The show, now celebrating its 30th makeover, airs on Lifetime Television and the American Forces Network, with episodes also available for streaming online.
